Historical Note

The discovery of oil on Spindletop hill just south of Beaumont occurred on January 10, 1901. It ushered in the birth of the petroleum industry in the United States. Since that time, there have been two major anniversary celebrations honoring this monumental event in Beaumont. The first occurred on the fifty year anniversary of Spindletop in 1951 and the second occurred on the one hundred year anniversary in 2001.

The Spindletop 2001 Commission along with the Friends of Spindletop organized the centennial celebration held on January 10, 2001. The commemoration took place at the Spindletop and Gladys City Boomtown Museum, and attracted attendees including former United States president George H.W. Bush and country music artist Tracy Byrd. Events that took place included a reenactment of the Lucas gusher eruption, featuring water gushing out of a derrick reproduction. Period actors in costume performed sketches, while memorabilia and commemorative "Spindletop 2001" merchandise was on display for purchase.
