Historical Note

Pure Oil Company originated in 1895 as a group of independent oil producers in Butler, Pennsylvania who were attempting to compete with Standard Oil Company. In 1920, Ohio Cities Gas Company purchased a share of what was then called Pure Oil Producing, Co., changing its name to Pure Oil. At that point, the company was operating a refinery in Texas in the Beaumont and Port Neches region. The Union Oil Company of California then purchased Pure Oil in 1965, trademarking the Pure Oil name while rebranding it as Union 76. Until 2003, Union 76 was known as "the offical fuel of NASCAR."
