Scope and Contents

The collection consists largely of black-and-white photographs of managers James Baldwin and Nick W. Goodrich, scenes around the Beaumont Iron Works plant, and an Air Force flyover event. The collection also features local newspaper clippings, as well as telegrams regarding the Air Force flyover between Beaumont Iron Works management, U.S. Navy and Defense Departments, and Senator Lyndon B. Johnson.

These materials date between 1946 and 1951, the years in which Gene Bird Gilliom worked as a private secretary for Beaumont Iron Works manager James Baldwin.

Historical Note

The Beaumont Iron Works Company was founded in 1910. During World War II it manufactured military equipment for the U.S. Army and Navy. James F. Baldwin, appointed as manager of Beaumont Iron Works in 1946, announced his resignation in early 1951 in order to pursue other business opportunities with McLeod Machine Works and Butler Industries, both companies based in Beaumont.

Gene Bird Gilliom worked as James Baldwin's private secretery during his time at Beaumont Iron Works, where she collected photographs of the company's plant, newspaper clippings, telegrams from Washington, D.C., and a copy of Baldwin's resignation speech.
