Historical Note

The Beaumont branch of the Young Men's Christian Organization was formed in 1901 following the discovery of oil at Spindletop and the subsequent population boom. In 1928, YMCA membership was growing quickly and a new building was constructed at 934 Calder St. which featured a swimming pool and dormitories in addition to gymnasiums and conference rooms. The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. Throughout the 20th century, the Beaumont YMCA served as an important community center and continuously fundraised in order to open new locations and complexes. In 2010, while construction was underway on a new building located on Dishman Road, the YMCA filed for bankruptcy in the Eastern District of Texas.
