Historical Note
The Beaumont Young Women's Christian Association (YWCA) began in 1911 when a group of 10 Beaumont women met and drew up the organization’s charter. Mrs. W.P.H. McFaddin, Mrs. J. Frank Keith, Mrs. Charles Chaison, Mrs. T.S. Reed, Jr., Mrs. Oscar Norsworthy, Mrs. J.W. Mackey, Mrs. F.N. Law, Mrs. W.A. Shrigley, Mrs. J.A. Glen and Mrs. D. Edward Greer were among the organizers. The Constitution and thirteen By-Laws were written in 1913 by a 21 member board of directors. In July of 1918, the YWCA moved into its permanent home on Calder Avenue. The building was completed at a cost of about $100,000 and included a swimming pool and a cafeteria. Services provided by the organization included low cost living quarters for women, swimming classes including classes for post-polio and cerebral palsy patients, children’s day camp, Y-Teens, ballroom dance classes for all ages, Golden Years sports clubs and a wide variety of enrichment courses and activities for women.
