Biographical Note

Mary Ogden Hayden was a lifelong resident of Beaumont and the surrounding area. She attended South Park High School and was a member of the Beaumont Melody Maids. The collection includes photographs of her high school classmates and photographs of programs and activities of the Melody Maids. Some of the photographs were taken during a trip the Melody Maids made to New York City to appear on the Ed Sullivan show. Also included in the collection are photographs taken by a family member of a Nome train wreck and other local area disasters. There are also photographs of local residents looking at a beached whale which was on exhibit in Port Arthur.

Abstract

Members of Mary Ogden Hayden’s family were longtime residents of Southeast Texas. Her uncle, Louis Ogden, owned a hardware store and Chevrolet dealership in Anahuac. The family was also involved in rice farming in Winnie. The collection includes photographs of students in South Park High School when Mrs. Hayden was attending, photographs of the Melody Maids while Mrs. Hayden was a member of the group, and photographs of local disasters and events which were taken by Mrs. Hayden’s brother. Other items in the collection include 1945 gas ration tickets, a 1948 Melody Maids Souvenir Booklet, and newspaper clippings.
