Biographical Note

The photographs in this collection were taken by Clinton B. Glasgow, who lived in Beaumont, Texas. His work as a chauffeur and salesman for a prominent Texas businessman, John N. Gilbert, took him to locations in the Humble and Orange oil fields, and to other states that included New York, Kentucky, and Maine, and also to Juarez, Mexico. The photographs he took on these trips reflect his interest in the oil industry, daily life in the surrounding community around Beaumont, and in general things that he observed while on his travels. The photographs in this collection were retained by the Glasgow family for many years before being donated to the Tyrrell Historical Library.

Abstract

This collection consists of photographs obtained from John E. Glasgow of Pacific Palisades, California, which were taken by his grandfather, Clinton B. Glasgow, of Beaumont, Texas. The photographs depict the travels of Clinton Glasgow as a private chauffeur and salesman in the geographic locale of Texas and Mexico (with primary emphasis being that of the region of southeast Texas), and his further travels to Kentucky, Maine and New York. The images also reflect Clinton Glasgow’s particular interest in the Pierce-Arrow automobile, as well as his interest in trucks, and trailer extensions to trucks.
