Historical Note

This collection consists of more than 2,000 photographs found by Marcus Robbins, the first archivist of the Tyrrell Historic Library, in file cabinet drawers. Each drawer contained a pile of photographs without enclosures of any kind and lacking any type of organization or description. There was no documentation confirming the transfer or donation of this material and no one working at the library at the time had any information concerning the origin of the photographs. It appeared as though library personnel had just thrown the photographs into the file cabinet drawers as they either received or found the items.

Mr. Robbins recruited a group of volunteers from the Beaumont Rotary Club who were long-time residents of Beaumont to help identify as many of the photographs as possible. The identification work was completed by the end of May, 1991, and then under the guidance of Mr. Robbins, the volunteers worked on a system for describing, organizing, and indexing the collection of photographs to make them useful and accessible to library patrons. This work was completed in November of 1992. Since that time the list has been updated twice and new photographs have been added to the collection.
