Scope and Contents

The Art Museum of Southeast Texas Beaumont Photographs Small Collection consists of seven sleeves of photographs and corresponding negatives. The first two sleeves contain photographs of notable buildings in downtown Beaumont, including the Gilbert Building, the Goodhue Building, the Beaumont Savings Building, the Heisig Building, and the Rosemont Hotel.

The other five sleeves contain photocopies of historic photographs of downtown Beaumont and Southeast Texas, including street scenes, homes and buildings, the interiors of businesses and stores, and photographs related to local rice, lumber, and railroad industries.

Biographical / Historical

The Art Museum of Southeast Texas was established in 1950 as the Beaumont Art Museum. The museum was originally located in a rented house on Calder Avenue and then in Old Town, Beaumont's Historic District, on a property donated by the family of J. Crooke Wilson. In 1987, the Beaumont Art Museum became the Art Museum of Southeast Texas and moved to its current location at 500 Main Street in downtown Beaumont. The Museum primarly collects works by Texas and local artists, including John Alexander, James Surls, and Paul Manes. It also houses a large collection of Mexican and American Folk Art.
