Scope and Contents
The Joan and Norman Lowrey Papers features mixed materials related to Beaumont history and genealogy but primarily to the Beaumont High School class of 1944. The collection includes three scrapbooks, one of the 1970-1971 Presidency of Sue Broussard of the Xi Eta Zeta Exemplar Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi in Vidor, Texas, and two others highlighting the 1944 class of Beaumont High School, including a book of Obituaries. Other material in the collection includes photographs and biographical information of the Beaumont High School class of 1944 collected through regular reunion questionnaires dating from 1985 to 2004, as well as a compilation of the Beaumont High School News prepared for the Beaumont High School class of 1943 for their 45th reunion. The collection also includes clippings from the Beaumont Enterprise and Journal documenting Southeast Texas current events and history, particularly highlighting early families, ranching, and rice farming (many written by Nederland-based columnist W. T. Block), as well as Louisiana and Acadian history. The collection also features detailed Ahnentafel and Descendancy Charts and Family Group Records, all of the Blanchard, Broussard, and Arcenaeux families.

Biographical / Historical
Joan and Norman Lowrey were both Southeast Texas natives. Joan was a frequent visitor to the Tyrrell Historical Library, a member of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas, and a descendant of the French family, one of the earliest families to settle in Beaumont and the namesake of the John J. French House in Beaumont, now a local museum operated by the Beaumont Heritage Society. Norman served in the National Guard and in the Army during World War II and the Korean War, respectively. After graduating from Beaumont High School in 1944, Norman attended Lamar University and afterwards he worked there as Coordinator of Adult Education until his retirement. They both were active members of First Christian Church in Beaumont.

Abstract
Joan and Norman Lowrey were both Southeast Texas natives. Joan was a descendant of the French family, one of the earliest families to settle in Beaumont, and her husband Norman served in the National Guard and the Army in World War II and the Korean War, respectively. After graduating from Beaumont High School in 1944, he attended Lamar University and afterwards worked there as Coordinator of Adult Education until his retirement. Their collection features mixed material related to Beaumont history and genealogy, primarily through memorabilia from the Beaumont High School classes of 1943 and 1944, as well as a 1970 scrapbook of the Xi Eta Zeta Exemplar Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi in Vidor, Texas. The collection also includes clippings and excerpts from the Beaumont Enterprise, Beaumont Journal, and Beaumont High School News.
