Biographical / Historical

The Magnolia Garden Club was founded in 1937 in Beaumont with 47 original members led by Maude E. Sawyer in order to spur interest in home gardening and flower arrangement as a way to restore social activity in the area as it began to come out of the Great Depression. The group has gone on to regularly compete in, host, and judge flower shows both local and national, organize plant swaps, sponsor lectures, fundraise for non-profit conservationist groups, create junior gardening clubs for children, and activily participate in city beautification schemes. The club is attached to the Garden Club of America's Zone IX and remains active today.
