Scope and Contents

This collection consists of memorabilia, correspondence, artifacts, photographs, plaques, awards, and framed items from Mayor Becky Ames' office. The materials represent the many organizations and intitiatives spearheaded by Mayor Ames during her 14 years in office. The collection features photographs of Mayor Ames and high-profile guests including George W. Bush, Gregg Abbott, Laura Bush, Kay Bailey Hutchinson, and Ben Carson. The collection also features a large quanitity of memorabilia, including branded items from local companies, a firefighter's helmet and axe, medals, pins, American flags, drinkware, ceremonial scissors, and a key to the city. The largest series of the collection consists of awards, trophies, certificates, and plaques dedicated to Mayor Ames and City Council from numerous organizations as appreciation for her service.

Biographical Note

Mayor Becky (Benoit) Ames served as Mayor of Beaumont from 2007 to 2021. She was the longest-running mayor of the city, serving for 14 years across 7 terms. In total, she spent 27 years on City Council. Mayor Ames recieved many awards and recognition from organizations both locally and nationally. As a leader for the city's disaster response team, Mayor Ames was faced with a greater number of natural disasters than any mayor before her. Her work as an advocate for the arts in southeast Texas led to a Local Arts Leadership Award presented at the U.S. Conference of Mayors in 2020. She was also a tireless advocate for Beaumont Animal Care, helping to convert the shelter to no-kill status. She was only the second female mayor in Beaumont's history.
