Scope and Contents

This collection consists of photo albums, loose photographs, and a patent certificate with accompanying correspondence. The photographs relate to members of the Gilbert, Prothro and Shaw families, or to Charles Lester Shaw, Lynn H. Gilbert, or Frances Katherine Shaw Gilbert. Also included in the photographs are personal friends, vacations and other events that took place during the course of these three individuals lives. While the patent certificate and correspondence are for a Tyson H. Gilbert from Abilene, Texas.

Biographical Note

Lynn H. Gilbert was born on August 8, 1899, in Colorado City, Texas, and later as a young man moved to Beaumont. In World War I and World War II he served in the United States Navy. He spent his professional career working in the City of Beaumont Fire Department. In that capacity, he eventually rose to the position of chief mechanic with the department.

Lynn Gilbert was married three times during the course of his life. His first wife was Kathleen Tanner. They had a child together by the name of Jimmie Lynn Gilbert. His second wife was Lempi Elsa Rostett. She had a step child by the name of Robert E. Fleming from a former marriage. And his third wife was Frances Katherine Prothro. Frances Prothro had formerly been married to a Charles Lester Shaw, who died in 1964. Shortly after his death, she then married Lynn Gilbert. Frances Katherine (Shaw) Gilbert had no children and worked as an operator at the local telephone company in Beaumont, while her former husband, Charles Lester Shaw, had been a welder at Bethlehem Steel Company in Beaumont.

This collection consists of family photo albums and loose photographs related to the Gilbert, Shaw, and Prothro families. There is also correspondence and a patent certificate that was issued to a Tyson H. Gilbert from Abilene, Texas, dated July 7 and 8, 1931.

Abstract

Lynn H. and Frances Katherine Shaw Gilbert were long-time residents of Beaumont, Texas. Prior to their marriage in 1966, they had both been previously married. This collection consists of family photo albums, loose photographs, and a patent certificate with accompanying correspondence for an extended family member. Also included in the photographs are items related to friends, vacations, and events that occurred in the course of their lives.

Arrangement

This collection is arranged into three series.

The first series consists of ten photo albums. The first of these is of the Prothro family from 1905 to 1946, the second of these is of the Gilbert family from 1918-1922, five of these is of Frances Katherine Shaw when married to Charles Lester Shaw up to 1964, and two of these is of Frances Katherine Shaw when married to Lynn H. Gilbert from 1966 to 1979.

The second series consists of loose photographs of the Prothro, Shaw and Gilbert families that span a time period from 1922 to 1970.

And the third series consists of a patent certificate and correspondence related to a Tyson H. Gilbert from Abilene, Texas, dated July 7 and 8, 1931.
