Biographical Note
Joseph Bryan Morris (1892-1982) was born in Hamilton, Texas and moved to Beaumont in 1917 after graduating from the University of Texas. He worked as a lawyer in Beaumont, most notably as an attorney for the Beaumont and South Park School Districts, as well as the Port of Beaumont and South Park Junior College (precursor to Lamar College of Technology, and later, Lamar University). He also served for a time as special court justice of the 9th Court of Civil Appeals. He is known as the "grandfather" of Lamar University in part because of his work as chairman emeritus of the Lamar board of regents from 1954-1970. He was also responsible for writing the bill that transformed South Park Junior College into the four-year Lamar College of Technology in the late 1940s.
